ADUE Teaching Award

The ADUE Teaching Award recognizes undergraduate teaching efforts in courses that have significantly advanced one or more of the four goal areas of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education (ADUE) office: preeminent engineering education, experiential learning, academic innovation, and academic opportunities for all.  College of Engineering students, faculty, and staff may submit nominations for individual and/or team awards.

2023 Individual Winner:

Melissa Wrobel

For her work in developing tools for students to be more attentive, engaged, and confident in providing peer feedback in her ENGR 100 course.

Dr. Wrobel is not only a teacher, but a mentor and advocate for our students and a fantastic collaborator and co-instructor.

For their efforts to incorporate innovative pedagogical methods and student-centered learning in their ENGR 100 course – Food Science and Engineering.

Since fall 2020, they have done away with deadlines and instead allow students the flexibility to submit their best possible work products.  This ensures more equitable opportunities to succeed.

Individual Winner: Kenneth Alfano

For his efforts incorporating a wide range of engineering simulation tools into his ENGR 100 course – Design in the Real World. 

Student Testimony: I found the course incredibly informative and important for understanding engineering design work.

Team Winner: ENGR 101 Instructional Team

Laura Alford, James Juett, and Laura Burdick

For their work to improve the ENGR 101 course, both for staff and students, and their impact on first-year students in the College of Engineering.

Nominator Testimony: ENGR 101 is a fundamental course that shapes students’ perceptions of their first year at U-M and within the college of Engineering.

2024 Individual Winner:

Charlie Michaels

Charlie has been instrumental in advancing Preeminent Engineering Education at Michigan Engineering. His co-authoring of the socially engaged design model, now integrated into several courses, offers a novel approach to including contextual factors in engineering design. 

Through his efforts, Charlie has ensured that our students benefit from an educational experience that aligns with the finest globally.

Patricia (Paty) embodies the goals for office of the ADUE through her role as an assistant director for DEI at CRLT-Engin. 

Paty has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication and quality in her work, particularly in three key areas: Preeminent Engineering Education, Academic Innovation, and Academic Opportunities for All.

John Getsoian

As laboratory services manager, John does an outstanding job maintaining the 108 GFL lab space and assisting over 500 students each semester across 25 lab sections.

Carol Lagemann

As the CRLT-Engin Financial Specialist and Event Planner, Carol is the logistical mastermind behind numerous important events.

Nominator Testimony: Carol has been instrumental as the co-lead of the CRLT All-Staff DEIJ professional development team.

Rachel Armstrong-Ceron

As the Honors Academic Advisor, Rachel works closely with approximately 300 Honors students to support their efforts to broaden their leadership and expand their undergraduate education. 

Nominator Testimony: Rachel is a best-in-class advisor and ensures that every student has a phenomenal advising experience by balancing the support she offers with the appropriate amount of challenge.

Connie Hallom

Connie’s efforts as the Administrative Assistant with the Program in Technical Communication allows our students to have excellent learning experiences.

Nominator Testimony: With the return to campus after COVID-19, Connie went above and beyond to ensure students had equitable access to TC courses.
